This page has been designed for the people who learn English as a foreign language. A lot of people find this information useful and valuable. The examples of short dialogs and stories presented here are loosely written - you will not find direct matches between the names of the English tenses and the sentences. However, the advantage of these examples is in the fact that they reflect real situations in life, and also that these expressions of English are very close to the Native American English.
For those of you who are not interested in reading these dialogs, I added a few links below:

  • How often do you go to a library?
  • I usually go there once a month. That seems to be too rarely, according to our teacher. He keeps telling us we should read more books, especially novels.

  • Do you like coffee?
  • No, I prefer tea. I used to drink a lot of coffee, but my parents were telling me it was too much caffeine, so I stopped drinking it.

  • What kind of weather are we having now?
  • It's raining. Nobody wants to go out right now. It doesn't matter, because there is plenty of things we have to do at home. First, you need to clean your room and make your bed. You haven't done this yet since the morning, have you? Second, you need to start working on your school project. Your English teacher has told me that you are not always on time with homeworks, and if it continues to be this way, she will not be able to recommend you to participate in the school play that you volunteered at the beginning of the semester. I hope you will have enough time today to make up for all of it...

  • Are you going to work tomorrow? I remember you saying you have tomorrow off.
  • Yes, I am going to work tomorrow. I will have off the following Saturday.

  • Who is watching TV right now? Can you turn it down a little bit?
  • No problem. I will turn it down right now. It's been too loud for everyone.

  • What are you having for lunch?
  • I'm just having a sandwich right now. I will eat something else later, when I come back home.

  • What time do you have to catch your plane?
  • The plane is departing now. I'm afraid I will have to take another one tomorrow. It looks like many of my plans are going to fail. So... We will spend another day together, and we can have more time to talk about our family.

  • Have you seen my keys? I have been looking for them all morning, and I can't find them...
  • No, I haven't. But I know that Rob wanted to pick up the spring water from the trunk, and he may have done that this morning. You may want to ask him if he took your keys.

  The Past Tenses

  • Simple Past
  • Past Continuous
  • Past Perfect
  • Past Perfect Continuous

  • How did you spend your time yesterday?
  • I went to school in the morning. On my way back from school I went to the library and I borrowed some books. When I came back home, my parents were still absent, so I watched TV for a while and I played cards with my older brother. He was teaching me how to calculate probability with the cards. Then my parents came back home from shopping, we ate a quick dinner together and I started doing my homework.

  • What were you doing last Saturday?
  • We were watching TV all day because it was raining. In the evening the weather cleared up a little, and we went out for a walk. That didn't last too long because it started raining again. Overall, It was not a very good day, but we spent a lot of time together at home talking about everything and watching good shows.

  • Your English is very good. When did you start learning it?
  • It was a very long time ago, probably in my middle school. My learning wasn't going very fast at the beginning. In fact, I was still studying the basics when I was in high school. But the last year of my high school was probably a turning point. I started learning fast by taking some additional classes and traveling.

  • When was the last time you went out of town?
  • It was last week. We went for a school trip on a bus. The weather was great, but our bus driver didn't have a good day. The bus broke down on the road, when we were about 10 miles away from our school. Some of us were happy, some of us were sad because of this. The people, who enjoyed their time, didn't want to go to that museum, which was the goal of our trip. They enjoyed the weather, and were happy to play hide-and-seek in the woods, where the bus got stuck. Actually, I was one of the happy people there. We spent about two hours running around and laughing, falling on the ground, climbing trees and God knows what else we were doing. Miraculously, nobody got hurt. Finally, we got back on the bus, and were pulled away by the large truck that came over to save us. Then we had to use a lot of energy to make our teacher happy again, but we were not able to make her happy until we finally returned to school.

  The Future Tenses

  • Simple Future
  • Future Continuous
  • Future Perfect
  • Future Perfect Continuous

  • Do you think it will rain today?
  • Yes, I do. If it rains, I will not go to visit my friends' party. Instead, I will stay home and help you clean the basement. I hope you will then help me with my computer. I can't run any applications on it. I may have to take it to a repair shop, but I don't want other people to see what I keep in there. I hope you will agree with me that personal information cannot be shared. That's why I need your help. You may be able to fix it.

  • David, will you be able to come over to my desk during your break? I need to show you something.
  • Yes, I will, Mrs. Brown. I know what you will tell me. You will explain to me how to use a word processor. Yes, I will be happy to come and learn something new. Even though my older brother knows everything about computers and word processors, I will appreciate learning it from you because you are my teacher. Am I right?
  • Yes, you are, David. It will be good for you to learn a bit about computers. I don't want you to be behind in the classroom.

  • Where are you going next summer?
  • My parents have several plans for this summer, and I hope at least some of them will be done. I will go to Spain for about two weeks to stay in a hotel, then I will go to England for about a week to stay with my cousin. He will show me a lot of interesting places on the Island.
  • Do you have enough money for all your trips?
  • I don't right now, but I will have a summer job during the first part of the vacation. I will be selling tickets for concerts and distribute newspapers in July, and then in August I will be making my travel plans come true.

  • Can you help me carry all these bags to the kitchen? It will be so much easier to do it, if two people do it together.
  • Yes, I can. I will help you. I am curious what you have in those bags, because I'm very hungry. We didn't have enough food during the last week.
  • I will be cooking for the entire family. Can you help me with that, too?
  • I can help you with most of it. You know that I have my schoolwork to finish. Besides that, you know that I am not an expert on cooking. But if you need me to peel potatoes or wash the dishes, I can go for it.

  • What will you do if you stay home today?
  • I will clean my room and help you vacuum the entire house. I was not planning to go to that party anyway. I had enough loud music at the school dance party last Saturday. I enjoyed it, but it's too many parties if they happen every week. Besides that, this coming party is not any celebration at all. It is just another way to spend time, which is also the reason why I don't want to go, because I have lots of other ways to spend time.
  • I think you are making the right decision. Will you then be able to fix the washing machine? It hasn't been working for the last two weeks.
  • Okay, I will try to fix it. I hope I will be able to do it.

  • Will you come and join us at the meeting tomorrow?
  • Yes, I will. I am curious about who will come to the meeting and what some people have to say. We need to change some business strategies, because some of them have not been recently effective.

  • The current academic year ends in the second half of June. Our professor says that by the end of that time we will have read several books on the subject of chemistry, and most of them we will have gone through by ourselves. Well, even though he may think it's a great idea, some people have already tried to argue with him. What do you think about all of this?
  • Well, it looks like some people just don't want to learn or don't want to study. The end of the college program will come quickly, but they don't realize that what they will have learned by the end of college, will happen to be the topmost education for their lives. I think they should be taking advantage of the opportunity to learn as many important things as they can.
  • You are too serious with me here. Sorry, but I have to leave now. I am going to have done several things today by 6 pm, when my evening class is about to start.
  • Yes, I know what you mean. By 6 o'clock tonight I will have finished all my tutoring sessions with my junior students. It's been nice talking to you. See you next time!
